Case Study: Bishops Green Community Youth Project

We aim to create and devise a series of projects and workshops for young people living in Newbury and West Berkshire. This year we have started working in collaboration with the Bishops Green Community Youth Project enabling them to play in the space at 101 and experience a range of activities.

The week started with a tour of 101 and meeting some of the professional artists and makers of our recent outdoor production, Furious Folly. The company had been building and creating the performance which included a metal tree and fabrication of four towers all of which was pivotal to the performance.

The group also met 101’s long standing resident, John Ever Afraid from the production The Berkshire Giant, which was created in 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad programme. The young people were given the opportunity to get hands on with the puppet and start to enjoy the playfulness around puppetry, bringing John Ever Afraid back to life.

Back at its base, a wider youth group from Bishops Green took part in circus workshops with Cathi Valentine from Circus Scene, learning to juggle, walk on stilts, perform with the Diablo and put together mini performances.

Later in the week at 101 they had the chance to build on these skills and participate in a highly energetic and physical workshop with local aerial group Spin City. Each young person explored aerial and hoop work with tutor Amy Cappa, which spinning and being suspended in the air on trapeze and hoops.

To culminate the week the group participated in a lantern making workshop with Jane Cannon. Later in the year the group will take part in the Festival of Light lantern procession throughout Newbury which involves hundreds of community participants who have created lanterns in workshops across the District. The group created the beginnings of large heads to be used in the procession later this year.

It was clear from the week that the young people enjoyed working, playing, devising and exploring in 101, beginning a relationship between which will continue to grow. Future plans include working with the young people to create carnival costumes and build giant mechanical machines to participate in local outdoor events.
